HP Reports High Volume of Failures on Pavilion PC Motherboards

HP has warned owners of it's Pavilion series desktop PC's that they are experiencing a "higher than expected" volume of failing motherboards.  However instead of issuing a call back of the faulty machines HP have applied an extra 12 months warranty.
Models affected by the issues are the Pavilion P66xx, Pavilion Slimline S5660f and the Pavilion Elite HPE-4xx.  All of these are desktop machines and "may experience no video at start up and stop responding," according to HP

If your the owner of one of the above machines and your warranty has expired, you will need to get in touch with HP within the next year to be eligible for the extra 12 months warranty.  Shipping costs are also included in the warranty.  However you can expect to be without you machine for up to three weeks

HPhave listed the serial number range of PC's affected and said only "small percentage of systems in the serial number range" are affected.  They have also issued a support document on their website

Customers within the US and Canada only are eligible for the warranty extension and free motherboard swap.
